Highlights

In September 2024, Sudan continued to face severe economic challenges, marked by significant increases in the prices of essential commodities.

  • The price of sorghum surged to SDG 2,021 per kilogram, reflecting a sharp 25% increase from August 2024 and a shocking 371% rise compared to September 2023.

  • Wheat flour also saw a notable rise, with prices reaching SDG 3,540 per kilogram, up 25% from the previous month and 194% from the same period last year.

  • The average price of goats climbed to SDG 118,535 per head, showing a slight increase of 3% from August and a dramatic 277% rise from September 2023.

  • In contrast, groundnuts experienced a decrease in price, falling to SDG 43,885 per kantar, an 18% decline from last month and a significant 64% drop from the previous year.

  • The cost of the WFP Local Food Basket rose to SDG 2,231, which represents a 16% increase from August and a 237% increase compared to September 2023.

Additionally, the Sudanese pound depreciated slightly in the parallel market, falling by 2% to approximately 2,600 SDG per USD, marking a 225% decline in value since September 2023. This situation underscores the ongoing inflation and currency challenges that are making it increasingly difficult for households to afford basic necessities.
