UNAMID provides training in fuel efficient stoves making for women in south Darfur
UNAMID Gender Advisory Unit in Nyala, south Darfur concluded a two-month capacity building programme for women on making fuel efficient stoves in Kalteela Locality, South Darfur. Over 1000 women benefited from the training which is part of the Mission’s Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) programme aimed at protecting the environment as well as minimizing possible security risks which women are exposed to while collecting firewood.
Addressing the gathering, UNAMID Sector South Head of Office, Mr. Berhanemeskel Nega, underlined the importance of women’s empowerment to enable them to take care of their families. “UNAMID stands ready to support the local community and enhance cooperation with the State Government as peace building, reconciliation and peaceful coexistence are pillars for development for any community,” added Mr. Nega.
Addressing the trainees, the State Minister of Social Welfare, Aisha Mussa Hanno, emphasized the need for women to use the acquired knowledge to train other women in their communities so that the skills can cascade to all levels of society,” Mrs Hanno added.
Omer Abdul Mawla, the Kalteela Locality Commissioner expressed his appreciation for UNAMID’s continuous support to women groups in the locality and affirmed that the project will contribute positively to environment preservation in the area.
The Head of the Women’s Union in the Locality, Mrs. Kalotom Hussein, requested more support from UNAMID for the women focused projects in the area, particularly in the construction of a women’s centre.
