KHARTOUM, Sudan (PANA) - The executive
director of the UN Population Fund, Nafis Sadik, flew into Khartoum Monday
on a three-day official visit to Sudan to evaluate how the agency's "programmes
are progressing."
"In Sudan some of the social indicators
are not very good like maternal and infant mortality...STDs, even HIV/AIDS,
and the Sudan government is very eager to do something to reduce their
impact. So we will be discussing all that," she told reporters on
arrival .
The agency started to assist population development programmes in Sudan since 1978.
It currently supports about 20 projects in the areas of reproductive health, population development and advocacy with a total expenditure of 17 million US dollars for the period 1997-2001.
