As participants begin to arrive in El Fasher, a special ceremony was held today in which the Wali (Governor) of North Darfur received representatives from UNAMID and UNICEF at his official residence and formally acknowledged their support and contributions to the 21st National School Competition. UNAMID's representatives also handed over sports and radio equipment.
UNAMID's acting Chief of Staff, Miguel Martin, and the Chief of UNICEF's North Darfur Field Office, Olushola Ismail, underlined the two organisations' commitment to support the success of the national event. Mr. Martin also voiced hope that the cooperation between UNAMID and the government would continue in other fields.
The Mission's Deputy Police Commissioner, Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, was on hand to present the Wali and the State Minister of Education with a donation from UNAMID's police force, amounting to just over 6000 SDG. He stated the sum was a personal contribution from the policemen and women, adding that while the amount was modest, the support was sincere.
In addition to providing logistics and technical equipment, today UNAMID has transported over 300 participants by air to El Fasher from Nyala, South Darfur.
