Sudan: The UN deplores the withdrawal of SC/UK from Darfur, calls for ensuring the safety of aid workers

Khartoum/New York, 21 December 2004: The Special Representative of the United Nations' Secretary-General for Sudan, Jan Pronk, expresses his regret that Save the Children UK had to take the difficult decision to terminate its operations in Darfur. The Special Representative reiterates his strong condemnation of acts of violence targeting humanitarian workers.

The Special Representative calls on all parties to abide by the principles of International Humanitarian Law and by the terms of the Humanitarian Ceasefire Agreement of 8 April 2004 as well as the Abuja Protocols of 9 November 2004 on Security and Humanitarian Issues. He reminds the parties of their responsibility to ensure the safety and security of humanitarian workers.

The Special Representative expresses his appreciation and gratitude for the valuable contribution of Save the Children UK and its dedicated staff in alleviating the suffering of victims of the Darfur conflict. He salutes the resolve of Save the Children UK to remain committed to the people of Sudan and looks forward to its future operations in other areas of the country.
