Sudan: SPLA battalion in Akot town withdrawn following recent eruption of violence

The Government of Southern Sudan has decided to replace the Sudan Pepople's Liberation Army battalion in Akot area of Rumbek, East County, Lakes State, after seventeen soldiers were killed and seven civilians injured in recent clashes. The decision came at the conclusion of a visit by a high ranking delegation led by the South Sudan Minister of Interior, Gier Chuang, to the area.

Deputy Governor of Lakes State, David Nok Marial, told Miraya FM that the delegation managed to end the tensions and restore calm after a series of meetings held between SPLA and local leaderships.

Marial said that the government arrested a number of suspects involved in the clashes, adding that they are currently under investigation.
