Highlights
▪ The humanitarian situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate, with the unrelenting conflict, displacements, and rising protection concerns across multiple states. Cholera outbreaks in White Nile, Gedaref, and South Kordofan pose serious public health risks, exacerbated by shortages of medical supplies and strained healthcare services. Deportations of South Sudanese and Ethiopian nationals back to their countries continue, raising concerns over protection violations.
▪ The Sudan UN RC/HC issued an urgent appeal following funding cuts by key government donors, warning of catastrophic consequences for millions in need. She urged major donors to reconsider their decisions and called on governments, private sector actors, charities, and individuals to step in, to prevent further suffering.
▪ Returns to Sudan from Egypt have risen sharply, increasing from 17,230 in January to 26,529 in February. The primary drivers include economic hardship due to the high cost of living, prolonged waits for UNHCR registration, delays in obtaining legal residency, limited access to education, and declining hospitable environment for refugees. At the same time, over 112,000 vulnerable Sudanese refugees remain on the waiting list for cash assistance, struggling to meet basic needs as severe funding gaps persist.
▪ The Ura Regional Forum took place on 26 February in Assosa. The forum focused on the Ura settlement as a model for integrated settlement planning, demonstrating the “Solutions from the Start” approach.
