Situation Overview

After years of protracted crisis, Sudan plunged into a conflict of alarming scale in mid-April 2023 when fierce fighting between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) broke out. Damage to mobile networks and other infrastructure, disruptions of banking and financial service providers (FSPs) have had cascading effects on liquidity, markets, and supply chains. The negative economic repercussions because of the conflict have fuelled a rise in inflation and depreciation of the Sudanese pound. Cluster partners are working with FSPs to assess their capacity and are implementing small-scale programs where transfers are feasible. The CWG in Sudan has been working to scale up CVA, aiming to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in addressing humanitarian needs.

By May 2024, more than 208,000 people were reached via sectoral cash by the Cluster partners of FSL (188K people), Protection (11.8K people) and SNFI (8.3K people). CVA are coordinated by the respective clusters with technical and coordination support from the Cash Working Group (CWG) as needed. Data is collected by the respective clusters using 4Ws on a monthly basis.

The CWG, co-chaired by OCHA, Mercy Corps, and the International Rescue Committee, comprises 87 humanitarian partners, including UN agencies, local and international non-governmental organizations, the Sudanese Red Crescent Society, donors, and provides technical support to the clusters for sectoral cash interventions.
