SITUATION HIGHLIGHTS
Sudan reported six new AFP cases this week with a total of 247 AFP cases up to week 27.
• Of these 247 AFP cases, 71 were notified since the start of the conflict.
• Samples from 25 of the 71 AFP cases plus six contacts (total of 56 samples) were dispatched to the Egyptian team via the Argeen port of entry in Northern state on 13 June 2023.
• VACSERA has shared results: of the 25 AFP cases, two are SL2 (2ntd), one is NPEV and 22 are negative. Out of six contacts, two are SL2 (one ntd), one is NPEV and three are negative.
• The situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate with breakdown of the ceasefire talks hence affecting the implementation of Polio Eradication Initiative activities in the country.
• The Federal Expanded Program on Immunization (FEPI) and WHO and UNICEF country offices in Sudan have come up with options to sustain polio and essential immunization functions during the acute phase of this emergency and revitalize fully functional programs during the second phase.
• To ensure effective communication, a weekly call and daily communication through WhatsApp group is in place with Public Health Officers of all 18 states.
