Situation Overview
In 2024, the humanitarian crisis in Sudan deepened as conflict continued to drive large-scale displacement and economic instability. By year’s end, 11.8 million people had been displaced, seeking refuge both within Sudan and in neighbouring countries. The prolonged violence severely disrupted essential services, including health care, water and electricity, while widespread infrastructure damage further restricted humanitarian access. Food insecurity escalated, with some regions experiencing alarming shortages due to disrupted supply chains and declining agricultural production. Despite severe access constraints, Multipurpose Cash Assistance (MPCA) remained a vital humanitarian response, enabling affected people to meet their essential needs with flexibility and dignity. In 2024, 760,000 people across 18 states in Sudan received such assistance, with $36.8 million disbursed through financial service providers. This assistance was particularly critical in areas where in-kind aid delivery remained difficult due to insecurity and market disruptions. The Cash Working Group played a central role in coordinating MPCA efforts, ensuring efficient aid delivery while strengthening partnerships with humanitarian actors. The Joint Market Monitoring Initiative continued to track market functionality and price fluctuations to safeguard the effectiveness of cash-based interventions. As Sudan’s crisis persists, sustained funding and enhanced collaboration will be essential to maintaining life-saving MPCA activities in 2025.
