Sudan - Flash floods (DG ECHO, UN OCHA, WHO, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 27 August 2024)

  • The humanitarian impact of the widespread flooding caused by heavy rainfall, which has been affecting Sudan since July, is still increasing.
  • As a result of the flood, the Arba’at Dam, located approximately 38 km northwest of Port Sudan, collapsed, reportedly killing at least 132 people according to AFP. Approximately 50,000 people living on the western side of the Dam have been severely affected.
  • According to UN OCHA, the floods had already displaced at least 118,000 people prior to the dam collapse, and 317,000 were already affected across 16 of the 18 Sudanese states. The worst affected states are Khartoum, Gezira, Kordofan and Darfur.
  • The floods also contribute to the spread of waterborne diseases. In August, WHO reported at least 11,327 cholera cases in Sudan, 316 of them deadly, since June 2023.
