SITUATION OVERVIEW

Humanitarian organizations – national and international NGOs, UN agencies and other entities such as the North Darfur State Ministry of Health (SMoH) – are extremely concerned about the impact of the conflict and insecurity, and subsequent mass displacement of thousands of people in Zamzam camp in Al Fasher and in other parts of North Darfur.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) reported on 28 April that about 406,300 people have been displaced from Zamzam internally displaced persons (IDP) camp since 13 April 2025. As of 27 April 2025, people displaced from Zamzam were recorded across 19 localities in four states in the Darfur region. The overwhelming majority of them are in Tawila (303,300 people), Al Fasher (83,900), Dar es Salam, Kutum, Melit and Kebkabiya (9,055 people) localities in North Darfur State.

In addition, there are about 7,600 newly displaced people in five localities in Central Darfur, an estimated 2,000 displaced people in South Darfur, and 400 displaced people in Shaeria in East Darfur. About 72 per cent of the displaced people were recorded in rural areas in four Darfur states, while 28 per cent were sheltering in urban areas, including major IDP camps.

The UN Children’s Agency (UNICEF) reports that about 180,000 people are still trapped in Zamzam camp. Many of those who fled to Al Fasher are taking refuge outdoors under trees or in schools and hospitals premises.
