Sudan: Darfur Integrated Taskforce (DITF) Information Update No. 3 - Current status of the military deployment for the enhanced AMIS

THE SECOND RWANDAN BATTALION HAS BEEN FULLY DEPLOYED TO DARFUR

Addis Ababa, 7 August 2005 - Today, 7 August 2005, the second Rwandan battalion comprising 538 strong men was completely deployed in Darfur (Sector 7-ZALINGUE). During the same airlift, 50 Rwandan Policemen were also deployed in the framework of the reinforcement of the CIVPOL component of AMIS.

With the deployment of the Rwandan Battalion, the African Union has now completely deployed three (3) new Battalions in Darfur. Following the AU Plan for the Enhancement of AMIS, the remaining battalions to be deployed up to 30 September 2005 are from Nigeria (2), Rwanda (1), Senegal (1) and South Africa (1).

Nigeria will start the deployment of its second Battalion (680 + 196 for rotation), on 10 August 2005 and will complete it by 18 August 2005.
