Situation overview

  • No new cases of cVDPV2 were reported in week 47. The total number of children paralysed by the virus remains 46 from 13 states. The most recent case detected had onset of paralysis on 5 October 2020, in North Korfodan state.

  • Eleven cVDPV2-positive environmental samples have been detected since the beginning of the outbreak, all from environmental sampling sites in Khartoum State.

  • No new positive cVDPV2 contacts were reported in week 47. The total number of positive contacts is 14 and 4 positive healthy children.

  • The national polio laboratory has reported two new L20B positives isolated from two AFP cases from Khartoum and Red Sea states.

  • The first round of outbreak response SIAs went ahead from 28 November - 1 December. Vaccinators aimed to reach 8.6 million children under five in all 18 states of the country, using mOPV2 vaccine. A daily brief on successes and challenges was shared with concerned offices.
