- Khartoum State is facing a major cholera outbreak, with over 7,000 cases reported in May 2025 - an increase of almost 400% compared to April 2025. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) treated more than 3,300 suspected cases between 24–30 May, across several overwhelmed cholera treatment centres in Khartoum. In the last two weeks, at least 97 people have died in the facilities supported by MSF in the city.
- The outbreak is linked to the recent arrival of large numbers of returnees and is exacerbated by the collapse of water infrastructure, with 80% of water systems non-functional in Khartoum due to targeted attacks on power infrastructure. A severe shortage of medical supplies and staff continues to hamper the response.
- A cholera hotspot has also been identified in Nyala in South Darfur, where MSF has treated 92 suspected cases between 25–30 May. New cases are rising, with patients arriving from across the city and surrounding displacement camps.
