Sudan - Attacks on civilians and escalating violence (DG ECHO Partners, UN, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 21 March 2025)

  • The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked the south of El Fasher, North Darfur, resulting in dozens of villages burnt and looted. Close to 10,000 households fled towards Zamzam camp and Dar Es Salam.
  • The situation in Zamzam camp is rapidly deteriorating. RSF have reportedly gained full control of surrounding routes, blocking movements with severe consequences on services, particularly water and fuel supply. The only DG ECHO partner present in the camp is seeking to limit resource usage to sustain operations for as long as possible.
  • Up to 60,000 people have reportedly moved back to El Fasher from Zamzam and surrounding areas in the past two months. They have settled in sites where the humanitarian situation is dramatically worsening with dire needs for water, food and sanitation. Partners on the ground are supporting local responders as El Fasher remains inaccessible.
  • Fighting also continues in Khartoum where the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) reportedly regained control of the Presidential Palace on 21 March. The UN Human Rights Office received credible reports of summary killings, sexual violence, arbitrary detentions and looting of community kitchens and medical clinics by the RSF. SAF-allied fighters have reportedly engaged in similar looting and criminal activities, with widespread arbitrary arrests.
