Key Highlights
• Health System on the Brink: The suspension of all non-life-saving health services due to a U.S. executive order on January 20, 2025, threatens the collapse of the Subnational Health Cluster Darfur (SNHCD) after March 2025.
• The recent U.S. funding freeze has affected 57 health facilities in Darfur, impacting 21% of the region’s health response capacity and limiting essential services, including maternal and child health, vaccinations, and disease surveillance.
• Humanitarian Coordination & Localization Efforts: Subnational Health Cluster Darfur (SNHCD) is the first Subnational Cluster that participated in a UN-led Inter-Agency Mission to Tawila, North Darfur.
SNHCD is supported by six NGO Co-Coordinators, five of whom are physically based in Darfur.
• Escalating Crisis & Health System Strain: Ongoing conflict and displacement have severely impacted healthcare access, with 17.4% of health facilities either partially or fully non-functional, critical shortages in medical supplies, and rising disease outbreaks.
• Revitalization of Disease Surveillance: The introduction of EWARS Mobile has transformed Darfur’s disease surveillance from a silent system into an active reporting platform, covering 370 health facilities and recording over 224,000 outpatient consultations.
