The ongoing war in Sudan, currently in its third year, continues to drive the world’s largest displacement and hunger crisis, further deepening humanitarian needs and instability in an already fragile region.

Based on the latest International Organization for Migration (IOM) Sudan Mobility Update , approximately 10.1 million people are internally displaced across all 18 states of Sudan, and around 4.1 million individuals who have fled to neighboring countries such as Chad, South Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia, Libya, the Central African Republic and Uganda.

Between December 18, 2024, and May 28, 2025, IOM recorded approximately 1.1 million returnees across 898 locations in Sudan, an 89 percent increase from the previous update. In addition, UNHCR reports 803,000 refugee returnees to Sudan from neighboring countries, with a majority coming from South Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia. This surge is largely due to displaced people returning to El Gezira and Khartoum after the Sudanese Armed Forces re-captured these areas.

WFP requires US$ 776 million to sustain its emergency response over the next 6 months (June-November 2025). Of this, US$ 575 million is needed for Sudan and US$ 201 million for neighbouring countries (of which about 74 percent is required for Chad and South Sudan).
