Ruth Rendell – a living memorial - fresh clean water in Darfur

Kids for Kids is inviting fans of Ruth Rendell, who died on 2nd May 2015, to help provide clean water for countless children in her name. Whilst the world will remember Ruth Rendell's wonderful, captivating writing, many fans will be unaware that Lady Rendell was a long term supporter and dedicated Patron of Kids for Kids, the Dorking based charity that helps the forgotten children of Darfur. For nearly fourteen years she has been a friend and mentor to Patricia Parker MBE the charity’s founder. Ruth’s support of water projects and the training of village midwives in remote villages to help eradicate FGM, was life changing. She will be hugely missed.

Patricia remembers her mentor’s support with affection and gratitude: “I met Lady Rendell just shortly after I founded Kids for Kids in 2001. Her belief in what we were doing in one of the most challenging and inaccessible regions of the world gave many others confidence in us and was key in enabling Kids for Kids to make such a difference to so many lives, particularly young girls.” Ruth came to our Candlelit Christmas Concert as one of our Readers almost every year. She always chose her Reading very carefully and they were always personal to her. She took part in our Drawn…to Darfur exhibition too, submitting a drawing not of a goat or a donkey like most of the celebrities who took part (symbolic of key initiatives that Kids for Kids runs in Darfur to help struggling families) but instead she drew her beloved cat Archie. “I like to think there was a pun intended in the way she wrote DA FUR across Archie's back. I never did ask her!” said Patricia. (see photo attached)

None of the handpumps for water that Ruth sponsored was named after her. She was practical. What was important to her, was getting water to people to stop the dreadful walk for water across the desert. With her son’s blessing, Kids for Kids would like to dedicate a very special water project in Ruth Rendell's name so that she will always be remembered in Darfur. Kids for Kids invites you all now to donate in aid of a brand new initiative – a Solar Powered Submersible Pump that will not only provide water for one village, it will support six villages in the surrounding area. When villages have water in easy reach, children can go to school instead of walking for water, and suddenly the future is full of hope. People do not talk of clean water in Darfur, just the desperate need for any water. This Solar Power Pump will gush with clean pure water and safeguard the health of countless children, in Ruth's name. What an incredible way to be remembered. Please donate today, and do add your own words in tribute to this amazing lady. “My heart goes out to all the family” says Patricia, “I only hope this project in memoriam will bring them comfort in some way. Ruth will be hugely missed at Kids for Kids.”
