Nyala (6 Dec.) - Numbers increase as region faces 60% illiteracy rate
The advisor of South Darfur on Women and Children’s Welfare and head of the Committee againts Gender-based-violence Fatma Konjom revealed that the number of homeless children in Nyala alone has reached 2873. Ms. Konjom stressed that poverty and the poor economic status due to the war were major contributors in this spreading phenomenon, and stressed its negative impacts on the region's health and education statuses. "This issue needs solutions for the future, yet the state also has to deal with an illiteracy rate of 60%. Konjom also announced of a 16-days campaign to fight gender violence in South Darfur.
