The CEO of Qatar Charity, Mr. Yousef bin Ahmed Al Kuwari, met with Mr. Gilles Carbonnier, Vice President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, at the headquarters of Qatar Charity.
The two parties discussed ways of cooperation between Qatar Charity and the International Red Cross, especially in the areas of providing humanitarian assistance in regions facing crises, disasters, and poor countries.
At the end of the meeting, Mr. Gilles Carbonnier invited the CEO of Qatar Charity to visit the Red Cross headquarters in Geneva.
In parallel with the meeting, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Qatar Charity (QC) have signed an agreement, under which Qatar Charity provided a grant worth USD 350,250 in support of the ICRC's cash assistance program for Sudanese refugees. The program will provide multi-purpose cash assistance for nearly 10,000 vulnerable Sudanese refugees to meet their most basic needs.
The fighting in Sudan entered its fifth month, and people in Khartoum, Darfur, and other areas are living in dire conditions with very little access to health care, water, and electricity. Food prices have surged across the country. The humanitarian situation is deteriorating dramatically, and people require urgent humanitarian assistance in the absence of a political solution. The intense fighting has led to thousands of casualties, more than two million people displaced from their homes, and hundreds of thousands of refugees seeking safety in neighboring countries, most notably Egypt, South Sudan, and Chad.
Cherine Pollini, ICRC Head of Delegation in Qatar, expressed the ICRC's deep appreciation for Qatar Charity’s generous contribution. This partnership will provide vital humanitarian assistance to thousands of people affected by the conflict in Sudan. Ms. Pollini added that the signing of the agreement signifies the shared vision of the ICRC and Qatar Charity to strengthen worldwide humanitarian action. The ICRC looks forward to continue working hand in hand with Qatar Charity to provide impartial and neutral humanitarian assistance to those in need in Sudan and beyond."
On his side, Mr. Nawaf Al Hammadi, Chief of Operations and International programs sector at Qatar Charity, expressed his gratitude for the partnership with the ICRC, stating, that “this grant agreement will help strengthen our collaboration in supporting Sudanese people affected by the conflict and address pressing humanitarian issues in neighboring countries. We look forward to continuing our joint efforts with the ICRC to make a positive impact on the lives of people in need."
Set to conclude in December 2023, this five-month endeavor aims to deliver essential multi-purpose cash assistance to an estimated 10,000 vulnerable Sudanese refugees. The funds will empower recipients to address their most pressing humanitarian basic needs.
