OCHA funding helps bring free health services and hope to displaced families in East Darfur

When Shadia Yousif Bakheit fled her home in Khartoum State due to the ongoing Sudan conflict, she arrived in Lagawa camp in East Darfur State’s capital, Al Daein, exhausted and unwell.

“My child and I suffered greatly upon arrival at the camp,” she recalled. “I had severe abdominal pain and even collapsed one day. My family took me to the Lagawa mobile clinic [in the camp]. I received all health services for free, and I am now in good condition.”

Her son, who was suffering from acute tonsillitis, also received treatment and recovered.

The mobile clinic, run by the non-governmental organization Alight with support from the OCHA-managed Sudan Humanitarian Fund (SHF), provides free essential health services to displaced families and host communities. Operating three days a week, it serves an average of 100 patients per day.

Services include primary health care consultations, rapid diagnostic testing, immunizations, antenatal care, psychosocial support and delivery services. The clinic, which also has a fully stocked pharmacy, currently serves around 86,000 people.

“The needs here are immense,” said Ahmed Osman, a community leader in Lagawa camp. “Without the clinic, the suffering of the displaced would have been much greater.”

In 2024 and 2025, SHF allocated US$17.3 million in East Darfur to support life-saving assistance for 1 million people, helping ensure that displaced families like Shadia’s can access free, timely health care when they need it most: https://www.unocha.org/news/free-health-services-bring-hope-displaced-families-east-darfur
