Kuwait donates 100,000 tuberculosis vaccines to Sudan

KHARTOUM, Aug 31 (KUNA) ­­ Kuwait delivered an initial humanitarian aid package of some 100,000 tuberculosis vaccines to Sudan on Monday as part of a total one million vaccines set to be delivered over the coming period.

The initiative is being carried out through cooperation between Kuwait's state Patients' Helping Fund Society (PHFS) and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The occasion was marked by a ceremony attended by Sudan's Health Minister Bahar Idriss Abu Garda, the Kuwaiti Ambassador to Sudan Talal Al­Hajeri, WHO Representative in Sudan Dr. Naeema Al­Gasseer and PHFS staff.

Commenting on the initiative in a speech, minister Abu Garda expressed his country's appreciation.
He described Kuwait as "the nation of humanitarianism and generosity" in regards to its reoccurring stances in supporting the people of Sudan.

The assistance package is "the latest in a record of generous contributions in the field of healthcare granted by Kuwaiti hospitals, clinics, medical funds and charities," he added.

For his part, the Kuwaiti ambassador said that the initial delivery will be followed another 900,000 vaccines ­ completing a total of one million ­ intended to "tackle this dangerous epidemic." The assistance will "benefit the people of Sudan as well as expatriates from neighbouring countries, who have been forced to seek refuge in Sudan due to circumstances," he added.

The ambassador also expressed appreciation for "the efforts of the bodies which carried out and supported the completion of this noble humanitarian task." For her part, the WHO representative valued highly Kuwait's role in the field of humanitarian work and its healthcare contributions to Sudan, in addition to the high quality of the vaccines handed out.
