Kids for Kids Urges Support for Desperate Humanitarian Needs in Darfur, Sudan on its 23rd Birthday

As Darfur, Sudan continues to face desperate humanitarian challenges, Kids for Kids, a pioneering charity dedicated to helping children and families in remote Darfur villages, is calling for urgent support. On the occasion of its 23rd birthday, Kids for Kids held a milestone celebration at No 11 Downing Street, underscoring the critical need for ongoing assistance in one of the world's most forgotten regions.

The situation in Darfur remains dire. The UN has said that Sudan ‘is the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today.’

Kids for Kids, founded in 2001 by Patricia Parker OBE, has been at the forefront of providing sustainable projects to some of the most isolated villages in Darfur. The recent celebration at No 11 Downing Street highlighted the invaluable support of donors, who have contributed to Kids for Kids' success over the past 23 years.

Patricia Parker OBE, Founder of Kids for Kids, says: "We will not turn our backs on the children of Darfur. I am determined that together we will fulfil the hopes of mothers and enable them to help their children. They need us, we will not let them down.

"A humanitarian and human rights catastrophe is unfolding in Sudan. With nearly 11 million people already displaced – 4 million of those are children – making it the largest child displacement crisis in the world – the country is poised on the brink of major famine. Kids for Kids can support children, and families in Darfur right now through the Greatest Need. We are able to provide emergency aid, repair broken hand pumps, train midwives, but we urgently need funding."

Kids for Kids has been adopting remote villages since 2001. Parker says: "Because we work directly with the communities in Darfur, we have been able to transform their lives throughout the 30 years Omar al-Bashir was in power. With the help of local village leaders, we are now in the throes of delivering emergency aid to 32 villages and will extend this as security allows. What we must do is adopt more villages and introduce our sustainable projects to ensure the children of Darfur have a brighter future."

About Kids for Kids

Kids for Kids transforms the lives of children living in abject poverty in Darfur, Sudan. The charity adopts villages, introducing an integrated package of grassroots sustainable projects identified, and run, by the villagers themselves which will lift them out of poverty long-term.

Our key project is our Goat Loan. We lend the poorest families 5 goats so that children have milk. Today this is their only source of protein. After 2 years, as the little flock grows, 5 nanny goats are passed on to another family, and so on. We lend donkeys to carry heavy loads, and chickens to the elderly for eggs, we provide mosquito nets and blankets, farm tools and much more.

We train midwives & first aiders to save lives. We build kindergartens & health centres. And we plant trees to slow the spread of the desert, provide shade from the strong desert sun and by-products that can be used, eaten, or sold by the communities.
