Khartoum issues deadline for southerners in Sudan

The Khartoum government on Tuesday announced a deadline for all South Sudanese people living in Sudan to legalize their status as residents.

The Sudanese Ministry of Interior set April 8, 2012 as the deadline.

The Director General for Immigration, Nationality and Passports, Major General Ahmed Atta Manan, said that South Sudanese who have not legalized their stay by that date would be dealt with as illegal foreigners.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Antonio Gutierrez, who visited both Juba and Khartoum last week, there are about 700,000 South Sudanese still living in Sudan. Tens of thousands of South Sudanese left Sudan around the time of independence last July
