What is a referral?
-
Referral is the process of connecting someone with a service that they need.
-
A referral system for victims/survivors of sexual violence brings all the different services together in a list.
It requires ongoing coordination with the service providers on the list, for example, to verify that they can take on new cases, where relevant.
A well-coordinated referral system may:
-
Reduce the need for a person to disclose their history on multiple occasions
-
Reduce the time and cost associated with getting services
... and overall work to prevent further harm.
Whether we are establishing a referral system or conducting referrals, the principles of a survivor-centred approach apply:
-
Safety: The safety and security of beneficiaries are primary considerations.
-
Confidentiality: No information should be shared with anyone without the survivor's consent. This includes choosing who they will share or tell their story with. Maintaining confidentiality allows survivors to feel safe and in control
Respect: All actions should be based on respecting the survivor's choices, wishes, rights, and dignity.
Non-discrimination: Survivors should receive equal and fair treatment regardless of their background or identity.
