Background
Otash camp is situated 5 kilometers North of Nyala town and was established in August 2004. The camp is divided into 15 sectors each headed by a sheikh (camp leader) who represents one or more ethnic groups. The camp is inhabited by 98,000 displaced persons.
Humanitarian partners provide health, nutrition, WASH, food, education, and protection services in the camp, while the government of Sudan provides security services through a stationed police post in the camp.
Majority of the houses were constructed from local materials (bush sticks and ropes) and roofed with plastic sheets. The camp witnesses collapse and damage of houses every year, and each year, the IDPs complain about the poor condition of their shelters.
In August 2022 heavy rains and flash floods affected IDPs’ shelters, latrines and the entire sanitation situation in the camp. On 17 August, HAC reported that in the first two weeks of August 2022, 500 shelters were destroyed while 1200 were damaged. As a result, a humanitarian team was established and fielded to assess the situation and determine needs.
