Flood Assessment Report- Sennar State (As of 21 August 2022)

Background

Heavy rains and flash floods were reported in five localities of Sennar state in mid-August 2022. The flood disaster affected houses and basic facilities. The poor drainage system and flood water have aggravated the situation, particularly in the Sinja locality.

Sennar State is located in the central east of Sudan. It shares international borders with Ethiopia and South Sudan; and national borders with Aj Jazirah, Gedaref, Blue Nile, and White Nile states. Its state capital is Sinja town. About 318,000 people (refugees and vulnerable residents) need humanitarian assistance in the state, according to the 2022 Humanitarian Needs Overview (HNO). There are about 437,000 people, 20 percent of the people in the state—in crisis and above levels of food security between June and September 2022, according to the latest Sudan Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis. About 108,000 people in the state are malnourished (2022 HNO).

On 21 August 2022, Inter-Agency Rapid Assessment, led by HAC and OCHA, comprising UNICEF, Save the children, FAO, UNDP, the African national organization for (AOHA), Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS), Child Development Foundation (CDF), FMOH, StateHAC, and Kuwaiti Patient Help (KPH), conducted a needs assessment to floods affected people at Sinja and East Sennar localities.
