To promote gender equality and girls' education, the European Union (EU) provides EUR 480,000.00 to Wassala Charitable Association to improve the learning environment in twenty villages in the locality of Al Damer in the State of the River Nile.

The project has identified the schools in need of rehabilitation. Latrines and outside walls have been constructed to increase protection of schools. The organisation is also promoting an awareness programme to encourage girls' education.

The long-term impact of the project is that it will enhance dialogue between the civil society groups and the local authorities in the rural areas of the River Nile State.

The project benefits not only girl children but also parents, schools, teachers, youth, local authorities and women in the River Nile State.

The State of the River Nile has a rural population of 911,198 and urban population of 42,062 only. As a result, most of the State rural population depends on agriculture, trade and livestock.
