Eastern Africa: Q1 Regional Cash and Voucher Assistance Overview (as of Aug 2025)

Attachments

In the first quarter of 2025, conflict, climate-related shocks and displacement continued to drive humanitarian needs in the Eastern Africa region. Cash and voucher assistance (CVA) provided a vital lifeline, enabling people to meet their basic needs with dignity and flexibility.

Between 1 January and 31 March 2025, about $136.1 million was disbursed through CVA interventions across six countries in East Africa. Sudan accounted for the highest share, receiving $50.0 million, followed by Somalia ($36.3 million) and Ethiopia ($19.4 million). Kenya recorded the lowest CVA disbursement at about $2.7 million.

The impact of US funding cuts, implemented over this period, has also begun to emerge, with CVA programmes in some areas scaled back or terminated entirely, constraining humanitarian partners’ ability to effectively respond to crises.
