DTM Sudan Displacement and Return Overview (2)

The Sudan Displacement and Return Overview presents data on both internally displaced persons (IDPs) and returnees from over 12,000 locations, 185 localities, and all 18 states in Sudan.

In addition to regular, nationwide DTM data collection with key informants, the report includes data collected throughface-to-face household surveys, with both displaced and returnee households. Data includes granular information on humanitarian needs and access to services, movement intentions, movement restrictions, and demographic profiles, alongside other key indicators. All survey data is representative at the Admin 2 (locality) level.

Main Findings:

  • An estimated 9,105,467 internally displaced persons (IDPs) were recorded across 11,405 locations in 185 localities, across all 18 states.
  • An estimated 3,682,861 returned individuals were recorded across 2,690 locations in 70 localities, in nine states.
  • Eighty-three per cent of returnees moved back from internal displacement, while 17 per cent returned from locations abroad.
  • Over half of IDPs (55%) and half of returnees (50%) were children under 18-years-old.

Key Trends:

  • The number of IDPs decreased by 21 per cent compared to the highest-recorded displaced population, and by less than one per cent compared to the previous month.
  • The number of IDPs decreased in 10 out of the 18 states compared to the previous month, and increased in Aj Jazirah, Central Darfur, Khartoum, North Kordofan, Red Sea, West Darfur, West Kordofan and White Nile.
  • The number of returnees increased by 5 per cent compared to the previous month.

Humanitarian Needs:

  • One third (33%) of displaced households and 14 per cent of returnee households reported at least one member went a whole day and night without eating within the past month due to insufficient food.
  • A quarter (25%) of displaced households and nearly one fifth (18%) of returnee households who needed healthcare were unable to access the necessary treatment or care.
  • Two thirds (66%) of displaced households and nearly one third (29%) of returnee households reported problems related to sanitation facilities.

Anticipated Displacement and Return Dynamics:

  • Sixty-seven per cent of displaced households reportedly intended to stay in their current location for the next six months, compared to 92 per cent of returnee households.
  • Among IDP households who intended to move, over half (53%) intended to return to their location of origin, while others intended to move to a new location (22%) or leave Sudan for another country (10%).
  • Of the total recorded returns in Sudan, approximately 3,068,169 individuals returned from internal displacement. This represents an estimated 26 per cent of the highest-recorded IDP population across Sudan.
