A Real-Time Study from April to July 2023: Understanding Sudanese Diaspora's Response
To comprehend the Sudanese diaspora organizations' interventions, its impacts and challenges following the conflict since April 15, DEMAC commissioned a Real-Time Review from April to July 2023.
This research adopted a qualitative approach, involving mapping active diaspora organizations in the current Sudan crisis and conducting key informant interviews. The primary qualitative data was complemented by a comprehensive review of resources related to the Sudanese diaspora response and a social media assessment of targeted diaspora actors.
Sudan's Diaspora Response: Responding to the Crisis with Purpose
The study identified 60 online-active diaspora actors responding since April. The majority (57%) were in the United States or the United Kingdom, while 18% were classified as "global," without a specific headquarters location. Notably, despite a significant Sudanese diaspora in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, there are relatively few Gulf diaspora organizations involved in political affairs. In contrast, North American and European diaspora organizations tend to be more registered and engage in higher-profile activities.
The Sudanese diaspora, estimated at over 4.5 million worldwide, swiftly mobilized to share vital conflict information and offer assistance for those seeking to leave Sudan. More recently, their efforts have focused on fundraising for direct humanitarian aid, in coordination with local NGOs, advocating politically in their host countries, and supporting over 850,000 Sudanese refugees in neighbouring countries.
This research was made possible by The H2H Network and has been part of the ARISE Consortium collaboration with CDAC Network and Internews.
