DDR Commission disarms 35000 fighters of Popular Defense Forces, Eastern Front & Darfur armed groups

The North Sudan Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Commission says it will disarm around 35,000 fighters of Popular Defense Forces, Eastern Front and Darfur armed movements, as part of its plans for 2010. The commission is targeting 15000 in Southern Kordofan State, 3000 in Blue Nile State, 2000 in Abyei, 5000 in the Middle Sector, 2000 in the eastern states, 4700 in Darfur states, more than 1800 combatants of Eastern Front and one thousand ex -combatants of the Darforian movements.

The commission revealed that the total budget for implementing this program is more than 1931000 Sudanese pounds. The northern Sudan Commissioner of Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) Sulaf Aldeen Salih, said that the program is considered as one of the most ambitious programs that maintain peace and stability in the country. Salih added that last year, national organizations witnessed 100% execution of their programs. The commission said that achieving this program based on the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, Eastern Sudan Agreement, and Darfur Peace Accord, in addition to the presidential resolutions on the Disarmament Demobilization and Reintegration program.
