One child was killed and four others wounded after a landmine exploded in Gita Junubi, a town in southern Malakal. The four wounded are now being treated in Malakal Teaching Hospital. Upper Nile State's United Nations landmine officer, Doep Du Plessis said the five teenagers were playing with an unknown object near the river side when the object exploded.
Plessis urged the public to not touch or tamper with any strange objects and to report the find to either de-mining experts, police, or relevant authorities in the State.
He added that the de-mining organization in Upper Nile State has been clearing Malakal's minefields for over three years and "everyone who knows about us should know us".
He assured that both the Southern Sudan Landmines Commission and United Nations Mine Action Office are working hard to clear landmines and unexploded ordnances in the area.
