Assessment Report: Rapid Needs Assessment Report intercommunal conflict – Abu Jubayhah, 5-8 June 2022, eastern corridor of South Kordofan State (10-11 June 2022)

Situation overview:
The intertribal conflict in Abu Jubayhah started on 6 th June 2022 between Hawazma (Awalad Khabosh subtribe) and Kenan tribe, in a case of armed robbery resulted into killing of one person from Kenan tribe. This was escalated in the second day into burring of houses and exchanging of shooting between two tribes using different types of guns, weapons, and heavy guns in Um Adarah, Farik Algoz, Al Dokhj, Awalad Khabosh, Al Gardod south and Helat Barnow residential areas in Abu Jubayhah town. This resulted to total 73 persons directly affected by the conflict reported to Abu Jubayhah and military hospitals including 19 persons death including one child and 54 injured persons, however, there are numbers of injures and death cases in the conflict affected areas are not part of this figures and had been treated locality or the death bodies have been buried without reported, this because each group they don’t want to show the actual figures of losses or injured. This serious security situation forced women, children, and girls to flee their homes to safe areas southern and western part of Abu Jubayhah town with a huge movement which resulted to losst of value assets either looted or have been damaged.

There are some tribes are affected indirectly by this conflict which are Kawahla, Bargo and Aoulad Himaid who are living in the same areas but numbers of their family members either injured or killed by the haphazard shootings.
The clashes between two tribes continued in the town for 3 days consecutively unit arrival of deployment of additional government military forces on 8th June 2022 to imposed security stability in the area and arrested most of the people with illegal guns and provokes people for fighting. Following this Abu Jubayhah executive director decided to apply some security control measures in the area by declaring a curfew from 8:00pm evening to 6:00am morning.
On 7th June 2022 Abu Jubayhah humanitarian emergency response team was formulated for this situation, the members consisted of HAC, Abu Jubayhah locality representative, locality Health department, Ministry of health and social welfare department, Abu Jubayhah medical doctor, military hospital medical doctor, Abu Jubayhah youth rehabilitation group, COR from the government side and the actives and humanitarian actors working have based in Abu Jubayhah UNHCR, GOAL, Care International, Save the children international, IMC, NCA, NEF and SRCS, in addition to resistance committee.

The purpose of this committee is to provide daily update on the security/humanitarian situation on the ground and response required either from the government side or humanitarian actors. The team continued conducting follow-up meetings twice a day and successfully mobilized resources for medications and referrals of 22 serious cases the tertiary level to Kosti and El Obeid for further medical treatment, provision of water tinkering, provision of medical mobile clinic, provision of meals through contribution from the charity people in the town and operation of water points in the affected areas. From both tribes and other group in the six affected locations 3096 individuals affected but not displaced, 15,150 individuals displaced, and 406 households burned. UXOs are observed by the assessment team and required urgent interventions from UNMAS for clearance and provide awareness to the local communities.
