Over 3 million people have received WFP assistance since the start of the emergency response in June 2022.

3.9 million people are estimated to be moderately acute food-insecure (Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission 2023).

Highlights

• Over 1 million school children have enjoyed meals using with WFP-provided rice across the island. Distribution of fortified rice to schools in nine districts across the island is ongoing, as part of WFP’s support to the National School Meals Programme.

• According to the CFSAM 2023, 21 percent of the population are not consuming adequate diets.

Situation Update

• The overall rate of inflation (year-on-year) for May 2023 was measured 22.1 percent, a reduction from 33.6 percent in April 2023, according to the National Consumer Price Index.

• According to the Colombo Consumer Price Index, inflation (year-on-year), in urban areas of Colombo district, decreased to 12.0 percent in June 2023, compared to 25.2 percent. Food inflation dropped to single digits (4.1 percent) after two years.

• According to the CFSAM 2023, 62 percent of households reported a reduction in their total monthly income, a decrease of 16 percentage points compared to the previous year.

• Households engaged in agricultural activities reported the biggest loss in income, attributed to the higher expenses in land rent, workforce, fuel, agricultural inputs and debt payments.

• Households that relied on social protection, pensions and humanitarian assistance reported stable or increased income, compared to last year.

• The proportion of households depending on unskilled labour, agriculture, pensions or assistance has increased, evident in urban areas and the estate sector. (CFSAM 2023)
