Situation Update

On 28 November 2025, Cyclone Ditwah made landfall in Sri Lanka. After days of continuous rainfall, widespread flooding and landslides, official reports sited over 2 million people affected nation-wide. WFP’s immediate emergency response provided essential non-food items to the Government and dispatched fortified foods to the most affected districts, supporting other relief efforts on the ground. Operational Updates

Home-Grown School Feeding

• WFP conducted entrepreneurship and business development initiatives across in Anuradhapura, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya and Matale districts, strengthening the capacities of small-scale entrepreneurs through consistent skills development.

• WFP carried out a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation training for 97 Economic Development Officers in Nuwara Eliya, enhancing beneficiary tracking, data quality, and reporting systems to support evidence-based programme management.

• WFP organized a network-building workshop in Buttala with 63 participants, followed by a divisional progress meeting on the same day. Additional network workshops in Madulla and Wellawaya further promoted collaboration, problem-solving, and progress monitoring across programme areas.

• WFP held a Social Behaviour Change (SBC) training session in Eravur Town, Batticaloa, where 52 students, teachers, and caterers were trained on essential food practices. Delivered by the Ministry of Health and Public Health Inspectors, the session strengthened nutrition awareness and safe food practices within the school community.

Food Assistance for Assets Creation

• WFP’s Food Assistance for Assets (FFA) activity in Matale and Kilinochchi successfully completed seven irrigation projects and six irrigation and drainage projects in Kilinochchi. These rehabilitations, carried out with active farmer participation, are enhancing local water management and agricultural resilience.

Adaptation for Resilience (ADAPT4R)

• The National Steering Committee of the ADAPT4R project convened its second meeting, chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and WFP’s Country Director. The committee approved the budget and second-year work plan, while WFP, as the Multilateral Implementing Entity, continues to provide technical oversight to help communities strengthen resilience against adverse weather impacts.
