Operational Updates Joint Rapid Flood Assessment
• WFP led a joint rapid assessment in collaboration with the Government of Sri Lanka, United Nations agencies and civil society organizations from 11 to 14 June. The objective was to assess the needs of flood-affected populations and to provide information to the government, humanitarian organizations, and stakeholders for immediate response and ongoing preparedness for the upcoming southwest monsoon.
Support to national programmes and capacity strengthening
• As part of WFP’s support to enhance the National School Meals Programme, 421 mt of oil and 271 mt of dates were distributed to 7,012 schools.
• WFP, in collaboration with the Health and Education Ministries, oriented 36 education officers from the Sabaragamuwa Province on the National School Meal Programme guidelines, food safety, and food-based dietary guidelines.
National Nutrition month
• WFP supported the Nutrition Division of the Ministry of Health in developing information, education, and communication materials, in commemoration of National Nutrition Month, themed "Healthy Foods, Our Right,". The leaflets covered topics such as oils and fats, healthy diets for a healthy life, reading food labels, and understanding ultra-processed foods. Pull-up banners were created to disseminate food-based dietary guidelines to the public, promoting awareness and education on nutrition.
Community Asset Creation
• As part of WFP’s FFA project, 14 projects were completed and cooking oil entitlement were distributed to project participants. Cash disbursements will follow. Home-grown school feeding
• WFP distributed 15 types of livestock support equipment to each of the 65 livestock extension offices across seven districts: Monaragala, Matale, Batticaloa, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Vavuniya, and Kilinochchi. This equipment was provided to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of poultry activities.
