Sri Lanka: SLRCS provides relief to the displaced in Muttur

Around 5,000 people are gathered at Al Tharique Maha Vidyalaya who are facing severe hardship due to lack of basic necessities.

The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society has sent a consignment of relief items to the displaced communities in Muttur who have come to the temporary camps at Kantale. The consignment included 1000 tee shirts, 1200 mats, 50 tents, soap and clothing. They were distributed to affected people sheltering in a Buddhist Temple, St. Joseph's College and Al Tharique Maha Vidyalaya.

A Red Cross delegation headed by the Hony. President of SLRCS Mr. Jagath Abeysinghe visited Kanthale on Saturday, 05th August to asses the needs of the displaced. The SLRCS committed to construct needed sanitary facilities immediately at this site.

Dry rations for one week, 700 mats and clothing were distributed to the displaced people at Al Tharique Vidyalaya. People at St. Joseph's Vidyalaya were also provided with meal, hygiene kits, towels and baby kits.

The staff and the volunteers of the SLRCS Trincomalee Branch are engaged in relief operations.

Twenty SLRCS volunteers are staying in day and night at Al Tharique Vidyalaya to assist these displaced people. Around 80 volunteers are taking part in distribution and relief activities. They are also supporting the ICRC for relief distribution.

The Trincomalee Branch of the SLRCS will continue the disaster response for the displaced people of NHQ and various partners.
