Sri Lanka: SLRCS improves water supply to IDPs in Vauniya

17 June 2009 Colombo: The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) has installed an Emergency Response Water Treatment Plant at Vauniya with purification facilities for distribution of drinking water to IDPs in welfare centers in zone 4 of Manik Farm, Vauniya.

Initially 50,000 liters of water will be distributed to IDPs daily through Red Cross bowsers Water will be obtained from a nearby tank. SLRCS has planned to increase the distribution of water up to 200,000 liters per day.

The decision to setting up of the water treatment plant was taken after the recent visit of a Red Cross delegation headed by SLRCS President Jagath Abeysinghe to Vauniya with Coordinating Secretary to H.E. the President (Parliamentary Affairs) Kumarasiri Hettige.

Water has been continuously provided by the Red Cross for more than 57,000 people of internally displaced.
