Following the tragic tsunami disaster that immensely affected thousands, the Singapore Sinhala Association (SSA) collaborated with the Singapore Sinhala Buddhist Association and the Maha Karuna Buddhist Society to provide a Community Hub as part of Sri Lankan government initiative to rebuild Hambantota district in Sri Lanka, one of the worst affected areas of the disaster.
Part of its mission is to reconstruct a destroyed village. The project - "Sinha Gammanaya (Lion's Village)" is estimated to cost about a million dollars. This housing project, funded primarily by the Singapore Red Cross' "Tidal Waves Asia Fund" (donated by the people of Singapore) will include the construction of 75 permanent houses in Hambantota, complete with community facilities and essential amenities.
The housing project work commenced in early May and the work is progressing rapidly. The houses will be ready for the occupation by early October.
Following are some of the photos elaborating the relief work and progress of the construction project so far.
