Sri Lanka - Severe weather (DMC, Met office, NBRO, Media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 07 July 2023)

  • Heavy rains and thunderstorms over the past two days have affected over 6,500 people across 14 of the total 25 districts.
  • The Disaster Management Centre estimates that 1,214 families (6,631 individuals) have been affected, including 9 people injured and 32 families (141 individuals) displaced to safer locations. 1,145 houses are reported damaged due to high winds, heavy rains, and lightning.
  • An advisory has been issued for the local public to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
  • The Sri Lankan Meteorological Department forecasts the continuation of the thundershowers across the country over the next 24 hours. A landslide warning has been issued for hilly areas in Nuwara Eliya and Kurunegala.
