Sri Lanka Red Cross Volunteers respond

Volunteers from the Sri Lanka Red Cross Batticaloa branch Disaster response team were deployed immediately to respond to the emergency caused by flooding in the Batticaloa district due to heavy rains during the past few days.

The earth bund of Nawagiri kulam in the Pooraitivipattru Divisional Secretariat Division has breached and overflowed causing heavy flooding in Vethuchchenai area.

10 Branch Disaster Response Team (BDRT) members of Battiacaloa branch are engaged in relief activity in affected area in Vethuchchenai. In addition, 03 Search and Rescue members were deployed to asses the situation and to rescue people in the Vethuchchenai area. The Search and Rescue team using 02 engine boats and 02 manned boats is engaged in the activity so far.

The Branch Executive Officer (BEO) Mr.V. Dharmendran was at hand with the BDRT team to guide them and asses the situation. 02 ambulances with 02 doctors provided by the Italian Red Cross on the request of the BEO have been deployed in the affected area.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has allocated funds for the transporting of affected people by boats.
