Sri Lanka: Red Cross Supports to improve Cheddikkulam hospital in Vauniya District

Cheddikkulam hospital in Vauniya District will be improved to cater to medical needs of internally displaced people (IDPs) who come from Vanni and staying in Vauniya.

A memorandum of understanding for the implementation of the project initiated by the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) and supported by the German Red Cross was signed at the Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition in Colombo today.

The MoU was signed by Secretary to the Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition Dr. Athula Kahandaliyanage ,President of SLRCS Jagath Abeysinghe and Country Coordinator of German Red Cross Andreas Lindner in presence of the Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.

The project at cost of Rs. 72 million will increase bed capacity of the Cheddikkulam hospital from the current 60 to 300. Additionally, 4 new wards will be constructed and X ray machines laboratory equipment furniture, beds will be provided. An operation theatre and blood bank will also be built.

The Minister thanked the Sri Lanka Red Cross and German Red Cross for undertaking the project for the benefit of IDPsfor whom the Ministry had made arrangements to provide a quality health service.

Earlier the German Red Cross handed over 6 mobile health clinics in the form of converted 40 foot containers at a total cost of Rs.5.5 million to the Health Minister and 2 ambulances to SLRCS at a cost of Rs.12.6 million for use of IDPS.
