Sri Lanka Red Cross Society hands over 162 Community based houses to tsunami beneficiaries Mullaitivu district

The Mullaitivu Tsunami housing reconstructing project initiated by the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society and funded by the German Red Cross, first stage constructed in Vanan Kulam, Uppumavelli and Theertha Karai was handed over to the benifitiaries on 14th March 2007.

The handing over was begin by Hony. Chairman of the SLRCS Mullaitivu, Dr. T.W Jeyakularajah and Programme activities were designed by him with the close coordination of German Red Cross Society. The official felicitation message of Hony. President Mr. Jagath Abeysingh of SLRCS was read at the occasion by Executive Director North & East Mr. T.Chithravel to the beneficiaries. The representatives of stake holders of this project Mullaitivu Additional G.A, Divisional Secretaries,members of village development forum and Minister of.Parliment Vannai, lingustive guset of ICRC - Mullaitivu HOSD,GRC - Mullaitivu / Colombo delegates ,SLRCS Branch Mullaitivu,Dr. Ravichandarn, representative of NGO/INGO were present in this occasion.

These 162 houses completed in Vanaan Kulam, Uppumavelli and Theertha Karai of three villages, constructed by the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society are funded by German Red Cross and with coordination & support of tsunami housing Reconstruction project. Oxfam is providing support for water & sanitation for this project. People of the community who didn't have their own lands were provided state land by the Government.

The Red Cross Society and the beneficiaries appreciated the high quality of the houses and thanked German Red Cross Country coordinator Alfredo Melgarejo, Mr. Emilio Teijeira Rodriguez Program Coordinator, Ms. Marilenx Team Leader and Mr.Alberto livonni construction coordinator for their commitment and dedication of their services for providing these valuable houses for vulnerable communities.

Other Red Cross Community housing projects are currently in progress in Mullaitivu under owner driven programs in Mullaitivu district, construction of 472 houses are ongoing with a total of housing projects in the district being 979.
