Sri Lanka: Red Cross distributes clay water filters to welfare centres for flood affected

500 clay water filters to be utilized at welfare centers for families affected by the recent flood, is being distributed by the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS).

A consignment of clay water filters worth one million rupees was handed over to the President of the SLRCS, Mr.Jagath Abeysinghe by the Chairman of REDMO, Mr. S.H.Nimal Kumar. REDMO is the commercial arm of the SLRCS, and is responsible for the production of this low cost, socially oriented, easy to handle clay water filter.

The clay water filter, the only of its kind developed under local conditions that produces potable water which eradicates or minimizes bacterial contamination that is common, especially in disaster or emergency situations.
