Security Situation
Three SLA soldiers killed in ambush 01.30 Thursday at Urani Junction, Batticaloa. Worrying as it is, this seems to be an escalation from LTTE factional fighting. No responsibility has been claimed.
Hathals in Ampara but no duplication in Batticaloa. Though there was not a strict "Harthal" in the Batticaloa Muslim areas there was a "Harthal" atmosphere at Kattankudy during this week. Muslim shops in Kattankudy and Batticaloa were closed. Their aim is to be included one party in the Joint Mechanism for tsunami Relief ( P-TOMS).
General Humanitarian Situation -
The JVP ( breakaway party from the United People's Freedom Alliance Government) has declared the next two weeks ( 01-14 July) as the 'Awareness Week' on the P-TOMS. They continue to oppose this joint mechanism.
Programme Activities
Education
In Trincomalee the Education team is engaged in a fact finding mission for new interventions. Already a few schools have been visited and partners have been met.
Various stationary items (Exercise Books, school bags, stationary items, Play items, water bottles and lunch boxes) have also been distributed to 200 children affected by the Tusnami in Kilinochchi. Of these 200 children, 110 are affected by the Tsunami while the rest are war affected.
Early Childhood education
Construction of 7 pre-schools in Transit Camps in Kilinochchi
construction of all the seven pre-schools completed. The partner (VEDRO) is making arrangements to provide school furniture and equipment. Parents provide man power and material support in making fences in the preschools.
Provision of play materials to preschools in Vudumarachchi East
SCiSL has signed an agreement with one of the INGO (ASB) for provision of school furniture, equipment , indoor and out door materials to pre schools constructed by ASB in Vadamarachchi east. In addition to these items SCiSL also agreed to provide supplementary food for the children, relief package to the teachers and children, teacher's salary for a year, through our local partner "VEDRO".
Boost the performance of pre school teachers by providing an transitional allowance for 12 months
Matara/ Galle: SCISL has finalized teachers allowance and Collected the account numbers of concerned teachers in all affected divisions .
Child Protection
33 cases were handed over to probation department in Batticaloa to be considered for fit persons allowance.
The Partnership Development Manager and Child Protection Adviser in Trincomalee attended the District Child Protection Committee (DCPC)Meeting. Two full time staff were appointed to work in District Child Protection Committee by the Govt. Agent. The magistrate has agreed to allocate funds for DCPC activities. SCiSL made an announcement any future child protection related activities within DCPC will be supported upon request.
The Protection team in Trincomalee is engaged in reviewing for vocational trainings of all 40 former Under age Recruits war affected children in the following towns; Muthur, Kuchchaveli & Eachchalampathai. All registration activities are completed..
