Sri Lanka: Military, NGOs discuss humanitarian work in Jaffna

Jaffna Security Forces Commander, Maj. Gen. G.A. Chandrasiri met NOG representatives last Monday (05) and discussed in detail the humanitarian projects launched in the area. Representatives of around 21 Non Governmental Organizations including UNICEF, UNDP, UNHCR, World Vision, ICRC and IOM attended the meeting held at the Security Forces Head Quarters in Jaffna.

At the gathering Maj. Gen. G.A. Chandrasiri also explained the importance of continuing humanitarian work under the current Security situation. He also took the opportunity to inform aid workers of the continuous assistance provided by the Security Forces in facilitating and coordinating humanitarian work in the area.

Discussions focused on providing facilities for people traveling from the Jaffna peninsula to Trincomalee by Sea facilitated by the Navy. The group also discussed the progress of de-mining activities in the Jaffna peninsula. Housing projects by NGOs have also helped in permanently resettling tsunami victims of Jaffna, the gathering was informed.
