Background On 29 October 2014 a massive land slide occurred in the Haldummulla Divisional Secretary area of Badulla district. The affected area is a known landslide prone area and located in a tea estate known as Meeriyabedda watta. This location is in the uplands of the island and quite cold compared to other parts of the country; yesterday the day time air temperature was 190 C.
The incident occurred around 0745 hrs and in this two km stretch there are 150 small houses (line rooms). The rough estimate was that there were about 300 occupants in these houses. Some adults had gone for work and many youngsters have gone to school when the disaster struck.
