Emergency Shelter and Transitional Housing
With funding from Japan, the European Commission Humanitarian Aid Office
(ECHO), Greece, and China, IOM has now completed transitional homes for
3,447 families in seven tsunami-affected districts of Sri Lanka.
Transitional houses are designed to
last between two and four years. They serve as temporary homes while permanent
houses and infrastructure are re-constructed in the country.
On some housing sites, IOM provides toilets, showers and other water and sanitation services, while on other occasions it is done through cooperation with other agencies in the districts. In addition, IOM has provided communal centres, pre-schools, play grounds, health centres, tea houses and other recreational facilities at transitional housing sites to help ensure that living environments support the physical and mental welfare of the residents.
At present, land has been allocated for IOM to build a total of 4,277 transitional houses in Sri Lanka.
